A little local knowledge didn't hurt Ryan Sagady and Ed Clements.

The area anglers fished familiar waters over the weekend in the Michigan Walleye Tour qualifier event on Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay and came away with second-place honors.

Sagady, a science teacher at Bay City Central, and Clements, a business teacher at Bay City Western, brought in 10 fish over the two-day event with a combined weight of 35.71 pounds to finish as runners-up among 45 competing teams.

"Fishing got real tough for us on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday," Clements said. "But we stuck to our program and did not go running around like chickens with our heads cut off.

"We caught a real nice fish right at the end of the day. Not giving up and fishing right until the end was a difference-maker for us."

The winning squad was the father-son combination of Kal Ustishen and Rick Ustishen, who caught a combined weight of 39.76 pounds. Third place went to Bill Putman and Billy Putman with 34.69 pounds of fish. The top-10 positions in the field paid prize money.

“We had a little rough weather on Saturday with the high winds, but nothing you couldn’t fish in,” said event organizer Ernie Plant, of the Saginaw Bay Walleye Club. “There were a lot of fish caught this weekend, we had a total caught and weighted of 382.”

The biggest fish caught during the event weighed in 7.42 pounds. It was caught in Saginaw River by the pair of Dean Miller and Dan LaDuke using a Reef Runner lure. Miller and LaDuke finished 24th with a total of 23.17 pounds.

The Michigan Walleye Tour’s next event is set for Linwood on June 12-13.
